There were some significant sums splashed out over the summer during the transfer window, which shut earlier than usual for English teams – hours before the start of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

With the season still only six games old, here are four of the most impressive summer signings so far:

Jorginho (Chelsea)

Only six games into the season and Chelsea’s £57 million summer signing has already completed 98 passes more than any other player.  Jorginho followed Maurizio Sarri from Napoli to Stamford Bridge this summer and has been controlling the possession for his side.

The Blues have made an excellent start to the new campaign with five wins from six with the help of the 26-year-old in central midfield.  Jorginho’s presence has also allowed N’Golo Kante to fly forward with more freedom to which the Frenchman has been very effective early on.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (Fulham)

Fulham had short Premier League relegation odds following their promotion to the top flight via the Championship play-offs last season. However, five goals in their opening six games from summer signing Aleksandar Mitrovic currently sees the Cottagers in 15th position.  He had previously scored only 10 goals in 40 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United.

The Serbian international had been on loan from the Magpies for the second half of last season before the West London club made the deal permanent over the summer. What a steal he may turn out to be.

Joao Moutinho (Wolves)

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Portuguese invasion helped them win the Championship last season and return to the Premier League for the first time since 2012.

Manager Nuno further strengthened his side over the summer and one of the most notable names was Euro 2016 winner Joao Moutinho in a bargain £5 million move from AS Monaco. The midfielder has looked excellent alongside fellow countryman Ruben Neves in centre midfield – helping Wolves hold both Manchester City and Manchester United to draws.

James Maddison (Leicester City)

Some thought Leicester City had made a huge gamble in paying Norwich City £24 million for the services of James Maddison over the summer. The 21-year-old has adapted to the Premier League immediately by scoring three goals and recording one assist in his first six starts for the Foxes.

Maddison has also won the most free kicks in the divisions through the opening couple of weeks, having been fouled 21 times – five more than any other player.
