The History of Bingo
The name Bingo, actually comes from a game known as “beano”, a similar type of game involving numbered discs. However, the origins of the game itself go way back to Italy in the 1530s, where a lottery based game known as “Lo Giuco del Lotto D’Italia” was played. This game is still played in Italy, even today. By the 1770s the game had spread to France, where it was known as “Le Lotto”, and on to Germany and Britain in the 1800s. Eventually it found its way to the USA where by 1929 it was known as Beano. The game soon became known as bingo, and it would have its first heyday in the 1950s-1980s, when hundreds of thousands of gamers played in the United Kingdom and the USA. By the 90s, bingo clubs were in decline, and almost disappeared completely by the first decade of the new millennium. However, online bingo has recently ensured that game is currently enduring its second heyday. Online bingo is most popular in the United Kingdom, where hundreds of thousands of gamers play every week, at the expense of the original bingo clubs which continue to close down at alarming rates.
How to play Bingo
Bingo is one of the simplest gambling games you can play. A player purchases a bingo card, and on that card are detailed a series of numbers in boxes. A large machine (or digital one, nowadays) then draws numbers from a pot, and it is the job of the player to match off those numbers on their ticket as they are drawn. If the player completes a specific series of numbers on their ticket (or card), they will win. You couldn’t really ask for a simpler game. How you win and the number of balls used to win and in the game in general, depend on what kind of bingo you are playing. There are a number of variants, after all.
90 ball bingo
90 ball bingo is most popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. This bingo game features 3×9 cards, and there are a total of 90 balls in the pot. The player can win in 90 ball bingo, by matching a line (one horizontal row of numbers on a card), two lines (two horizontal rows of numbers on a card), and a full house (completing the card). This means that there are three prizes up for grabs. Generally, if you get a full house within a specific number of balls being drawn, you are said to have won the “Snowball”, which is an even larger jackpot prize.
80 ball bingo
80 ball bingo is a more modern bingo game. This game has a 4X4 card, and offers a game in the middle of 90 ball and 75 ball bingo. Most 80 ball bingo wins come from patterns, rather than numbers. You will still need to mark off the numbers that are drawn, although they will form a pattern on your card, when crossed out. It is these patterns that determine the prizes, more often than not. Four corners, and X, centre square, and diagonals are just some of the patterns that can be winners. You can also win more traditionally, with lines.
75 ball bingo
75 ball bingo is a common form of the game, which is most popular in the United States. This game is played on a 5×5 card, is a faster game. Generally speaking, pattern wins are the most common types in this bingo variant, although a coverall jackpot is also present. A coverall jackpot is awarded when the player completes the card within a specific set of numbers being drawn. This is quite similar to the “Snowball” in 90 ball bingo.
